Oral and Maxillo facial Surgery is the surgical specialty of dentistry interfacing with medicine. It deals with the diagnosis, surgical and/or medical treatment of diseases, injuries and defects of the teeth, mouth, jaws and face. The scope of surgery includes removal of wisdom teeth, removal or exposure of other impacted teeth, corrective jaw surgery, dental implants, oral pathology, oral cancer, oral and facial pain, oral medicine, medical and surgical treatment of jaw joints, cleft lip and palate, maxillo facial and dental trauma as well as oral dental related infections.

To be registered as an Oral and Maxillo facial Surgeon, requires completion of a five-year undergraduate university degree in Dental Surgery, followed by a minimum of four years in an accredited based Oral and Maxillo facial Surgery training program. Furthermore, a strong commitment to continuing education and study is necessary to provide patients with high quality and gold standard treatment. It is important to ensure that the specialist surgeon to whom you are referred is suitably trained, qualified and registered.

Oral and Maxillo facial Surgeons do not practice any other forms of dentistry and are required to limit their practice to surgery, as a condition of registration.

Depending on the nature of the condition, patients are referred from a variety of clinicians including general dentists, medical practitioners, specialist dentists (eg orthodontists and prosthodontists) and other surgeons (eg Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeons, and Plastic Surgeons). A referral letter from your referring practitioner is necessary to allow you to claim for treatment from your private health fund and Medicare.
