Because the mouth is a region where changes can be easily seen, oral pathology (including cancer) can be detected in the early stages. Performing a self-examination regularly will help with early detection.

Oral and Maxillo facial surgeons recommend that everyone perform a self-examination once a month. If you are at high risk for oral cancer - smoker, consumer of alcohol - you should also visit your General Practitioner or Oral and Maxillo facial Surgeon for an exam yearly.

  Reddish patches
  Whitish patches
A sore that fails to heal and bleeds easily
A lump or thickening of the lining of the mouth
  Chronic sore throat or hoarseness
Difficulty in chewing or swallowing

If you have any of the above signs, it is recommended you see your Dentist or Doctor, who should refer you to an Oral and Maxillo facial Surgeon. A biopsy may be required, which entails removing a piece of the suspicious tissue. This piece is then sent to a pathology laboratory for microscopic examination. This is in order to make an accurate diagnosis of the problem, which will enable appropriate treatment specific for the type of pathology diagnosed.

REMEMBER

Pain does not always occur with pathology.
Early detection and treatment is the key to complete recovery.
Therefore DO NOT ignore any suspicious lumps or sores.
